Gothic art developed from the Medieval art style around the 12th century. The figures in these paintings are more animated in facial expressions and poses, are usually smaller in relation to the background scenes, and are laid out more freely in the space of the painting. During this time artists utilized four primary mediums: frescos, panel painting, illuminated manuscripts and stained glass. Many gothic artists used oil paintings to produce the smallest of details, with good perspective, where realism was combined with richly complex symbolism arising from the realistic details.
