The Barbizon School of art is an informal school of French landscape painters from about 1830 to 1870. Its name comes from the town of Barbizon, a favorite place for these painters. These painters went against the principles of classical landscape and promoted a straight study of nature. The Barbizon painters helped lay the groundwork for the subsequent establishment of the Impressionism style.
