Byzantine Art

Written by valerie vakili on February 13, 2013

Byzantine art is considered the expression most frequently employed to illustrate the artistic works within the Byzantine Empire from approximately the fifth century up until the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. Art created by Eastern Orthodox Christians residing in the Ottoman Empire is generally called "post-Byzantine." Specific artistic customs that came from the Byzantine Empire, specifically in respect to icon painting, are maintained in Serbia, Greece, Russia, Bulgaria, along with Eastern Orthodox countries to present day.
