Barbizon School

Written by deborah schneider on February 13, 2013

The Barbizon school of painters had been a component of an art movement associated with realism in art, that came about during the prominent Romantic Movement of that time period. The Barbizon school had been established during the mid to late 1800's. It acquired its title out of the village of Barbizon, France, close to Fontainebleau Forest, which was the location where the artists gathered. Probably the most notable attributes of this school are its softness, tonal characteristics, shades of color and free brushwork. In 1824 the Salon de Paris displayed pieces of John Constable where his countryside images motivated many of the more youthful artists of that time period. This motivated them to forgo formalism and pull ideas solely from nature and the world around them. Real moments took over as the themes of their artwork as opposed to background scenes of significant occasions.
